2. CEA
A blood test which is often used to mark tumors and aids in determining the stage and extent of diseases and the expectations of patients with cancer. It has also proven helpful with monitoring patients with rectum, lung, breast cancer, liver, pancreas, stomache, and ovarian cancer as well as other types of cancer.

3. Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP)
This particular test is used to mark tumors in the liver, ovary, and testes. AFT is a substance naturally produced by a liver in a fetus.

4. CA-19.9
CA-19.9 is another tumor marker found in pancreatic and stomach cancer as well as cancer of the bile ducts. It can also be present in non-canerous conditions like inflammatory conditions of the bowel. This test is also used to monitor patients response to treatments for these cancer circumstances.

5. CA-125
CA-125 is an element produced by the fallopian tube, endometrium and peritoneum. (lining of the adominal cravity) It's also a tumor marker for ovarian cancer.

6. CBC w/ diff Platelet Count
This test gives a complete blood count with a additional test to diagnose any illnesses that may be attacking your immune system such as infections, diseases which may affect your white blood cells like lukemia. Platelet test determine your risk for bleeding.

7. PSA
Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is produced only by the prostate gland. The prostate gland is located in the man's pelvis. It resembles a doughnut - shaped gland that is in the small space between the penis and the bladder,

8. Lipid - Associated sialic acid
LASA is a non-essential additon that is useful in managing a variety of malignancies, it is combined with other tumor markers, usually. In patients that have lukemia, lymphoma, breast cancer, ovarian, and colorectal cancer this test concentrates on the status of the disease, according to studies.

9. CA-27.29
CA-27.29 is a useful tumor marker for breast cancer. Maybe useful in other cancers too.

USPSA is a test that aids the management of patients treatment after surgical or medical procedures of prostate cancer. PSA is produced by the prostate gland. Fluid that nourishes the semen and then carries the semen during ejaculation is produced by the prostate. The quanity of PSA made by the prostate gland can prove helpful in detecting prostate cancer early, if in fact, you have cancer. It's also a helpful and important measure for following the progress of cancer.

Exercise and HIV

Maintaining your health physically and mentally is vital to HIV infected individuals. Although, exercise may not fight against or control HIV disease, it may aid in helping you feel better and reduce some of the side effects associated with HIV disease and HIV medications.

By doing regular, moderate exercises like weight training (resistance exercise) is the best way to increase lean body mass. Working out two – three times per week for an ½ hour should be enough if done accurately. Weight training combined with 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise can be the best way to improve body composition and keep your blood lipids and sugar down. Cardiovascular exercise works large muscle groups continuously. You may also want to try activities such as walking, jogging, bicycling or swimming can be cardiovascular exercise.

The Benefits

v  Strengthens and improves muscle mass

v  Improves endurance in the heart and lungs

v  Increase your energy level so you feel less tired

v  Reduces stress

v  May help stabilize or prevent decreases in CD4 cell count

v  Decrease cholesterol level and triglycerides

v  Improve sleep and appetite

v  Increases your sense of well-being

Some Risk of Exercise

v  If you don’t drink enough liquids, you risk becoming dehydrated

v  Injuries may take more time to heal

v  The loss of muscle mass from too much exercise

v  Doing the wrong “form” of exercise

Start workouts for 10 minute intervals, and gradually work your way into your exercise program because your fitness level may not be what it used to be and it will prevent injury.

Remember – Don’t overdo it and talk to your doctor. Choose activities that you will enjoy, whether its biking, pilates or running. Engage in something that will encourage you to stick with your exercise routine. Change activities if you have to, so you can stay motivated.

Promoting Healthy Cell Growth

Research has shown eating healthy levels of unsaturated fat, particularly omega-3 fatty acids that are found in fish and nuts are needed for your cell membranes to have the right shape and the ability to communicate. The nutrients you take into your body have the direct effect on your cell membrane, especially the fats you eat because they become your cells membrane. So, the food you take in has a major influence on the health of your cell membrane. Eating saturated fats or trans-fatty acids, these too become part of your cell membrane making your cells more rigid and unable to function like unsaturated fats.

Two other dietary components to consider that aid in promoting healthy cells are Inositol and Choline, which also aids in transporting signals across the membranes of your cells. These dietary components are found in the bran of grains such as; wheat or brown rice. Reported studies have shown a link between higher intakes of Inositol and lower risks of cancers, like colon cancer that may possibly be due to Inositol role in supporting healthy cell membrane. Choline is needed to form the phospholipids in your cell membranes, and serves many other vital functions in your body. Yolks of eggs contain high amounts of Choline.

Other molecules that help protect the fats in your cell membranes from damage are found in cereals, fruits, vegetables and grains. These protective nutrients include the vitamin E family of molecules, called tocopherols, which are found in the oils in grain. Beta-carotene in carrots, and lycopene in tomatoes; let’s not forget vitamin C from citrus fruits. So, because your cells often use proteins to carry messages to molecules in terms of communicating, the quality of the protein you consume is extremely important in supporting healthy cell membranes.

Proteins that compose the cell membrane provides a variety of important services like communicating between your cells, and by providing sites of attachment, which aids in your cells connecting with the structures around them and help keep them where they should. For example, cancer cells often have changes in these attachments proteins in their cell membrane, diminishing their power to “stick” or remain where they should, which allows them to instead roam around the body. Therefore, proteins in your cell membrane are important not just for the functioning within your individual cell but, also for the health of your whole body.

The new strain for HIV was discovered by french researchers. The research was conducted at the national reference laboratory for HIV at Rouen Hospital centre in northerwestern france. The new type of AIDS virus appears to have leaped the barries from humans to gorillas.

The new strain of HIV was found in samples taken from a Cameroonian woman. She was tested in 2004 for HIV, but, shows no signs of AIDS. This particular strain is part of the HIV-1 family which accounts for most HIV cases. There are three other strains of HIV-1 subtypes this new strain is now four. However, the first three are rare and all sub-types have been traced back to monkeys and chimpanzees. Read more about this click here.
